My children have been arguing a lot lately. I guess it’s to be expected with a 3 year old and a 7 year old… but it’s incredibly draining and also contagious. With them at odds so frequently, my husband and I become tense too. Then before long it seems like no one can agree on anything, or open their mouth without criticism falling out.
So yesterday while we were driving in the car, I came up with something a little different to change up the atmosphere.
I asked my 3 year old, “Felicity, what do you like?”
“Trees!” she replied.
Then I asked my oldest daughter, “Adelynn… what do you like??”
“Ummm… watching movies and eating popcorn with my family!”
Then I asked my husband…
“Camping!” was his response.
I asked myself… and decided that I like “good coffee!”
We did many rounds of this game and instead of the normal bickering that’s been happening in the car, we all activated the things that we like, the things that make us happy, things that we already have and are easy to find in our daily life. Then we all felt so much better.
It sounds silly, but to shift your focus from what you don’t want, to what you do want is just a thought away.
Try this game the next time you are anxious about the argumentative voices in your family or God forbid – your OWN head!
